The inspiration behind AgeingAngler
AgeingAngler began with a personal dream and a lifelong dedication to the art of Angling. As someone who is actually vintage themselves and exclusively uses vintage equipment, I always envisioned a platform to share this unique passion. This site is a reflection of that desire, hopefully sharing to a community that appreciates the timeless elegance and effectiveness of old-style angling.
In the late 50's I sat on the towpath of the Grand Union Canal in Leighton Buzzard & watched my Grandad wield pretty looking lengths of bamboo called rods about, while trying to catch some fish. In fact he was rather good and was Luton Angling Club Champion a few years running plus being a very successful match angler of his day..So started my lifelong relationship with Angling, although not doing so much of it when the family came along I got back into more so in the later years. Since retiring and getting really back into it, my love for those pretty sticks of Bamboo and everything that goes with them has grown and grown. Yes I bought a dreaded Pole and all the bits and bobs that the marketing boys want you to buy to go with it, but it wasn't the same. Yes, I also had carbon rods, all the carp gear and modern necessities (or so I'm told) to go with them, but the whole money driven, YouTube environment & idiology was just too much.
So I decided to go back to basics, I started firstly replacing my rods with the Bruce and Walker fibreglass float and ledger rods from the 60's, then moved up to buying some pretty bits of Bamboo from earlier years. These I coupled with some vintage fixed spool and centre pin reels for float & freeline ledgering.
It is now all Vintage or as near as I can get to it and I couldnt be a happier Angler....
